Article: Transforming Lives from the Inside Out
Transforming Lives from the Inside Out
Every year, around 45,000 people are released from prisons in England and Wales. For too many, this marks the beginning of a cycle of reoffending rather than a fresh start.
The statistics tell a stark story:
-
39.3% of adults reoffend within the first year of release.
-
75% will reoffend within nine years.
-
For those serving short custodial sentences (under 12 months), the reoffending rate rises to 56.9%. (Source: Ministry of Justice, 2025)
This revolving door is devastating — not only for individuals and families, but also for wider society. The financial cost is staggering, with it costing an average of £53,801 per prisoner per year to keep someone incarcerated in England and Wales. But beyond the numbers lies something more important: wasted potential.
Breaking the Cycle Through Creativity and Community
Inside Out was created to provide a different path. Through fashion, creativity, and mentoring, we equip people with the tools and confidence to build meaningful lives after prison.
Our programme offers:
-
Training courses and employment pathways in fashion and design.
-
Practical support such as CV writing, interview prep, and job applications.
-
Coaching and life skills to help participants navigate the world outside of prison.
-
A supportive community where participants uplift one another and remain connected beyond release.
We also work inside prisons — including HMP Highpoint, HMP Chelmsford, HMP Coldingley, HMP Cookham Wood YOI, and HMP Feltham YOI — to inspire people about the opportunities available to them.
The impact speaks for itself: with a 97% success rate in preventing reoffending, Inside Out has saved UK taxpayers an estimated £1.5 million per year — but more importantly, has given individuals the chance to start again.
Real Lives, Real Change
Behind every statistic is a human story.
Some of our graduates are now:
-
🎓 Studying at university
-
👕 Running their own fashion brands
-
🏫 Working as mentors and charity leaders
-
🎤 Speaking publicly and inspiring others
-
🍽 Training as chefs
-
💼 Designing with Inside Out itself
One participant shared:
“Inside Out gave me the chance to believe in myself again. I never thought I’d be studying at university — but here I am, building a future I didn’t think was possible.”
These are more than outcomes — they are transformations.
Looking Forward
While our community has achieved so much, there is still work to do. Thousands of people leave prison every year facing unemployment, lack of support, and stigma. With the right opportunities, they too can rebuild their lives.
That’s why Inside Out is committed to growing — reaching more prisons, supporting more participants, and creating even greater impact.
And we can’t do it alone.
